The best grass fed whey protein powder

In this article we look at some of the best grass fed whey protein powder on the market.  Here’s why…..

Many cows are raised on a diet of grains and are given drugs and hormones to make them grow faster.

This is quite different from the way these animals evolved, when they consumed a diet of grass and other edible plants.   Like many grazing animals, cows possess a second stomach, or rumen, which contains bacteria.  This bacteria works to break down vegetation into proteins and fats the cow can utilize.

Grass-fed cows have grazed in pasture year-round rather than being fed a diet of grain.  Cows fed with a grain rich diet can develop an overly acidic digestive tract, an ideal breeding ground  for E. coli bacteria.  This is one of the reasons grain fed cows are often given antibiotics to prevent the risk of infections.

This differing diet has a direct effect on the composition of the beef from these cows.   Those fed on a diet of grass, typically have a higher concentration of Omega 3s, used by the human body for brain, eye and nervous system development, and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), which is associated with reduced body fat.

The meat from cows fed grain also has a higher proportion of Omega-6 fatty acids when compared to grass fed beef.   These are widely regarded as being pro-inflammatory and, therefore, something that individuals should be mindful of consuming in excessive quantities.

Eating grass also has an effect on the milk that these cows produce, making it more nutrient dense.  This is of particular relevance since whey protein is made from cow’s milk.

There is debate between Nutritionists as to whether grass-fed whey is worth the extra cost but many claim that it is.  It’s also generally accepted that grass-fed cows are raised in better conditions and have a less harmful impact on the environment.
